Ladies First
While compiling a different playlist of overlooked post-punk gems, I found myself gravitating toward a handful of tracks, almost all of them from bands either fronted by or consisting entirely of women. As I continued researching, two particularly helpful articles guided me to the motherlode — this one from 2011 by Anthony Fantano of the Needle Drops for NPR honoring the passing of the legendary Ari Up and this one by Doug Prod for The New York Times featuring 12 Forgotten Classics by Women-Led New Wave Bands. Both of these informed this playlist, but I also added some of my personal favorites as well to almost get it to 2 hours of memorable, often times groundbreaking, punk, post-punk and new wave sounds.
